Animal Welfare Directive

Animal welfare is an important part of responsible sourcing. When we use materials of animal origin, it is our aim to source them with due care and to work with partners who share our expectations regarding animal welfare, traceability and responsible practices.

Our policy sets out the principles that we apply to materials of animal origin used in our products, as well as the expectations we have of our suppliers and business partners. Where relevant, it applies to materials such as wool, leather, down, feathers, silk and other materials of animal origin.

1. Avoiding Unnecessary Animal Suffering

We expect animals within our supply chain to be treated responsibly and with respect. Suppliers must comply with applicable animal welfare regulations and take appropriate measures to prevent unnecessary pain, suffering, fear or stress during the relevant stages of an animal’s life.

2. Transparency and Traceability

Transparency regarding the origin of animal-based materials is an important part of responsible sourcing for us. We therefore work to improve our understanding of where these materials come from and how they are produced. Depending on the material and the respective level of risk, we may request information on the following: country of origin, animal species, applicable animal welfare standards and supporting documentation.

3. Use of Recognized Certification Systems

Where appropriate, we support the use of recognized certification and traceability systems that establish requirements for animal welfare and supply chains. Certifications can provide additional assurance that defined standards have been applied and that certified material can be traced through relevant stages of the supply chain.

4. Prohibited Practices and Materials

Certain practices are not compatible with our expectations regarding animal welfare. Therefore, we do not accept the following:

•  Wool from sheep that have undergone mulesing;

•  Down or feathers obtained through live plucking or harvesting during moulting;

•  Down or feathers from force-fed birds;

•  Materials obtained through practices that cause avoidable and severe animal suffering.

In addition, we do not use real fur or exotic skins in our products.

Our aim is to continuously reduce the animal welfare risks associated with the materials used in our products and to support more responsible sourcing practices throughout our supply chain.
